Sony today announced the WH-1000XM5, its new headphones that succeed the popular WH-1000XM4. The new model has the right to a different design and better noise reduction.

Introducing Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Headphones

The headset with its new design replaces the wrapped arms that pivot on the XM4 with an exposed arm with a single point of contact at the earcups, which are slightly larger than on the previous generation, and aim to reduce wind noise during trips. The helmet weighs 250 g (against 254 g for the XM4).

Sony says it has taken its noise reduction system to new heights by adding a second processor to its WH-1000XM5. According to the company, the improvements are most noticeable in mid- and high-frequency noise. This includes things like street noise and voices.

Under the hood, Sony has made changes by abandoning its 40mm diaphragm to switch to 30mm. This should, according to Sony, allow for a more natural sound and improve clarity, as well as bass reproduction.

Eight microphones (four more than on the previous model) have been placed in a more optimal position for noise cancellation, which Sony says allows them to better eliminate high-frequency noise. Four beamforming microphones are integrated for better voice call quality, and an NC/Ambient button replaces the “Custom” button present on the XM4, although the button remains reprogrammable to activate voice assistants.

On the other hand, all typical Sony functions (LDAC, DSEE Extreme upscaling, 360 Reality Audio, Speak to Chat, etc.) have appeared on the new headphones.

On the battery life side, you can last 30 hours on a full charge with noise reduction. That jumps to 40 hours in noise reduction, 10 hours more than the XM4. The full charge is done in three hours. It only takes five minutes to charge for the equivalent of three hours of battery life.
