SFR today announces the Box 8X, a new offer that will satisfy lovers of speeds since it is possible to have up to 8 Gb / s. It’s available now. The first details had leaked yesterday.
8 Gb/s in fiber with the SFR Box 8X
According to SFR, the Box 8X is “the most powerful on the market”. The interesting aspect is that the operator uses XGS-PON fiber technology. This is intended to be more modern than the 10G-EPON used by Free with its Freebox Delta, which also offers 8 Gb/s.
Thus, the operator’s new box with the red logo offers a downlink speed of 8 Gb/s and an uplink speed of 1 Gb/s. It could even offer 8 Gb / s in upload speed in the future, but this is not mentioned for the moment. In comparison, Free is limited to 700 Mb / s.
It is worth pointing out that the box includes four Ethernet ports and each of them offers 1 Gb / s at best. You have to go through an SFP module (available on request) to really take advantage of 8 Gb / s.
Next is Wi-Fi. SFR says its Box 8X supports Wi-Fi 6. This is better than Free and Orange, which each offer Wi-Fi 5. On the other hand, Bouygues Telecom already offers a Wi-Fi compatible box. -Fi 6. But none offer Wi-Fi 6E.
SFR has therefore upgraded its Internet box, but nothing changes for the TV decoder. We stay on the model that was launched in 2019 and which offers speakers, two voice assistants (OK SFR and Alexa), as well as support for 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
Price and release date
The SFR Box 8X is available now from €34/month. This price concerns the first year, then we switch to 50€/month. Note that the offer includes unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles, as well as access to 200 channels, in addition to Internet access.
