The case shocked the ultra-Orthodox Israeli world. At the end of December, the left-wing daily Ha’aretz revealed that more than twenty women, young girls and boys had been sexually assaulted or raped by Chaim Walder. Author of dozens of children’s books, the man was a true cultural icon of this community which represents 10 to 12% of the population of the Jewish state. Some of these attacks also took place while the victims were undergoing therapy with him. Chaim Walder, who has sold more than two million books translated into eight languages, was also director of the Child and Family Center and education advisor to the municipality of Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox community near Tel Aviv. He also ran summer camps specifically designed for children suffering from trauma and abuse.
