Instagram is adding a new feature, namely automatic captions for videos. Adam Mosseri, the boss of the social network, announced the news via… Twitter.
Automatic subtitles are invited on videos
“It took us a while to do this, but we’re excited to share a new tool that empowers members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities”, tweeted Adam Mosseri. He points out that it is possible to enable or disable automatic captions for videos on Instagram.
Until now, creators had to manually add captions to their videos using third-party solutions, but this change makes the process seamless and makes Instagram more accessible to users who are hard of hearing and deaf or anyone who prefers watch videos without sound.
The option will be enabled by default, but as said before, it will be possible to disable it. Also, Instagram separately indicates that the new feature (which is being rolled out) is available in 17 languages. There is in particular French, English, Arabic, Spanish, Italian or even German.
In addition, Instagram assures that the quality of automatic captions will improve over time thanks to artificial intelligence. We can therefore understand that there will be imperfections at the start.
